Hollocombe Moor

Hollocombe Moor is one of our closest open access spaces, offering a taste of expansive moorland without going to Dartmoor or Exmoor.

Getting There
Hollocombe Moor is about 3 miles from the cottage and lodges. The easiest route is northwards on the main road out of Winkleigh - A3124. After a mile or so you'll see the moor on your right . Turn right along the northern edge of the moor, driving most of the way to the gate in the north eastern corner. The scenic route goes right out of our drive, first left at Tinker's Post and down into Hollocombe, then out the other side until you come across the moor. Ask for a map! These are steep and windy roads, but pretty. Take a lead in case of livestock. OS Explorer map 127.

This is a wonderful wildlife walk, particularly if you have long wellies and get into the wet bit at the bottom of the moor. Unlike most walks, where you have to keep to the path, Hollocombe Moor is open access (but please be considerate of grazing livestock).

It's rougher going than some local walks - you start by squeezing through a gap in the hedge, or choosing between a barbed wire fence and a distinctly ricketty gate.

It is tussocky in places too, with really long grass and marshy sections. But that makes it perfect for wetland plants and many birds.

And it's beautiful all year. In winter, the moor is a warm tawny brown from the purple moor grass.
